A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Robertson was the first
round draft choice (4th overall) of the New York Jets in the 2003
NFL draft. He became the first Jets rookie defensive lineman
to start every game since Marty Lyons did it in 1970. Robertson
began his football career at Melrose High School in Memphis, where he
was an honor roll student and also was on the track team for one year
as a shot putter. As a standout performer as a defensive tackle
and offensive tackle for the Golden Wildcats Dewayne
helped his team win the 1998 AAA state championship as well
as a runner-up finish in 1997. He was an All-State and
All-Metro Memphis honoree as a senior and a junior. He was
also rated as the No. 2 prospect in Tennessee and No. 31 defensive
lineman in the country by Super Prep. Dewayne continued
on to the University of Kentucky where he was a three-year starter, and
started 31-of-32 career games at defensive tackle. With the Kentucky
Wildcats, Robertson earned an All-American Dream Team choice by
The NFL Draft Report, was an All-Southeastern Conference
first-team selection by The Mobile Register and added second
team-honors from the league’s coaches and the Associated Press.
Dewyane was a General Studies major at the University of
Kentucky.
